Serratus anterior: An Important Shoulder Stabilizer

The serratus anterior is a group of muscles connected to the chest that help stabilize the shoulder blades. If this muscle is poorly developed due to poor development or instability, the shoulder blade is off the wing, or appear to protrude from the rear. In addition, the muscles around the rotator cuff and scapula will tighten in an attempt to stabilize the rotator cuff and scapula. The result will be pain and stiffness in the area, Apart from damage to the joints go.

The serratus anterior is like a band of muscles attached to each of the eight upper ribs on the side of the chest and from there, wrapped around the chest to attach the shoulder blade known as the medial scapular border.

This muscle is responsible for the extension, or move forward, the scapula that produces forward movement to stabilize the arm when you reach forward. It is also responsible the trend toward increasing our shoulder to stabilize the arm when it comes up. It is largely responsible for our ability to move his arms over his shoulders and the ability rotating the arm while above shoulder level.

The serratus anterior is supported and stimulated to action by the long thoracic nerve that originates with the brachial plexus. This nerve is especially susceptible to injury during surgery or infection in the area. The types of surgery can affect the process nerve thoracic nerve includes the removal of lymph nodes, back surgery near the area, broken ribs, or other types of injuries that can occur in that area. If the nerve brachii is damaged or the muscle is weak, often a winged scapula is the result.

What is involved in a winged scapula
Although the position is considered normal in children, in adults a winged scapula is a sign of muscle weakness and problems. When the shoulder blade protruding from the rear, especially when not in use, is a sure sign of a weak serratus anterior. This condition may also be accompanied by a protracted shoulder girdle. Full flexation or rotation of the shoulder may be restricted because of the winged scapula causes a forward tilt of the shoulder joint. In addition, the rhomboids may be weak and the pectoralis minor can be shortened.

The rhomboids are two diamond-shaped muscles on each side of the column directly below trapezius that connects to the column in T2 and T5 vertebrae and also connects to the medial border of the scapula along with another flame stabilizer supraspinatus tendon.

The pectoralis minor, located just behind the pectoral muscle is a triangular muscle, near the highest part of the chest and connected to the third, fourth, fifth and ribs and two other groups of muscles called intercostalis. The pectoralis minor pass over his shoulder and also connects along the top medial border of the scapula.

The risk of shoulder injury compounds supraspinitus weakness, lack of flexibility in shoulder external rotation and pectoral muscle shortening rhomboid minor or weak.

Exercises that hurt or heal
There are some exercises that should be avoided or that may cause injury or pain if performed while the serratus anterior and its supporting muscles are weak. These include the shoulder press, pull overs, pull downs, press bench, bench press, heavy flies, and other lat exercises.

You must, however, attempt to strengthen the serratus anterior and lengthen the pectoralis minor muscle. The exercises that can help you do should include shoulder raises, cable rows, the rows of lever sections pectoralis minor, the wall extends to lat, its cover changed portions, the shoulder belt stretching wall, door and motion subscapularis stretch the chest while swimming.

Avoid prolonged stretches and exercises that shoulder, holding his shoulder in a long-term position, and movements a day, even during sleep, causing the shoulder to extend, or move outwards.

To check if a weak serratus anterior or a winged scapula condition, standing against a wall and place your hands on the wall with open arms. If the shoulder of the road changes to the side and it is clear that very visible then you have a weak serratus anterior.

Importantly, only a weak muscle can not be all that is at stake here. The thoracic nerve can be affected, either by injury or infection, both current past events. Therefore, it is important to be diagnosed by a specialist before obtaining or affect treatment.
