Organic Mattresses, green tea, and toxic
At a time when bottled water, green tea, and organic food is popular because more people are concerned about their health, it is striking that the Consumer Product Safety Commission has forced us to sleep in known toxins in our mattresses. 16 CFR 1633, the new CPSC regulations came into force July 1, 2007 ordering mattresses to resist ignition from open flames will lead to people sleeping on toxic chemicals known. These chemicals include ammonium polyphosphate, antimony trioxide (arsenic), boric acid (cockroaches), decabromodiphenyl oxide, formaldehyde (a carcinogen), vinylidene chloride, and melamine (a substance found recently in food for pets that killed many pets). What is the worst of all, the CPSC does not require labeling of these chemicals by manufacturers of mattresses, they are free to use any chemicals they saw fit and the consumer is left in total ignorance on the issue.
Knowledge that the chemicals that the mattress industry were known use of toxic substances, the CPSC has conducted a thorough assessment risks of these chemicals and their effect on humans. In this evaluation, they prove that people will absorb these chemicals into their bodies. In addition, they admit potential risks to health are not fully known, but regardless of the uncertainty, they say that people will not be harmed from sleep on these new fire-resistant mattresses. However, the Center for Disease Control and the Environmental Protection Agency dispute some of the conclusions of risk assessment CPSC.
There are several things about the deletion of the whole issue. When consumers are presented this information to date 100% of people prefer a mattress without chemicals and assume the risk Minute (1-3000000 1 in 14 million) to die of a mattress fire. So why force CPSC on consumers what they would prefer to do without having learned the facts?
For mattress manufacturers to meet new standards, each specimen mattress must be tested in a combustion test facility designated. During this test, two burner propane flames are put to the mattress. The flames of propane are expected to imitate blankets on fire. What good is a fire retardant mattresses and blankets if the leaves are still burning?
If CPSC looks after the interests of consumers, why did they not require that mattress manufacturers to disclose what chemicals they use so that consumers could make a more informed decision? Furthermore, why did not they give consumers a choice between fire retardant mattress and non-flame mattress? These questions should lead consumers to look more closely at just who is really protecting the CPSC.
Two facts may allude what has actually led the move to instill 16 CFR 1633. The first is the fact that there is a lobbying group called the fire chemicals retardants Association. Is it possible that the benefits of new regulation FR chemical producers? Obviously! A second fact is that there is another pressure group called the International Sleep Products Association, which represents most major manufacturers of domestic mattress. As it turns out, the ISPA supported the new regulations EN. Could benefit from large national manufacturers such legislation crazy? If these new regulations put a financial burden on imports and small mattress manufacturers that they can not absorb and it leads them to close their doors, then the answer is so obvious. A case in point is the chain store was Badcock. Citing an article today 16/05/2007 Furniture store chain Badcock Top 100 is announced today it will close its bedding factory rather than making a "major expansion" that would be needed to meet new federal flammability regulations.
Another case in point is an article published by the newsreview.com 06/07/2007. Quoted in the article, "There are currently only 600 manufacturers of mattresses to United States, and new safety codes could eliminate one third of them. "This is serious evidence that 16 CFR 1633 was designed to benefit large domestic mattress manufacturers.
The good news is that there is the option to buy a mattress without FR chemicals, but there are few suppliers and it will force consumers to do a lot of homework to find them. It will also require consumers to obtain prescription from a doctor or a chiropractor to buy a mattress without FR chemicals. But it's worth the effort to protect your health. And if you bought a mattress made by one of the major brands after July 1, 2007, you should seriously consider drinking green tea lots and other powerful antioxidants. Your long-term health may depend on it.
